Pumpkin Spice Aloe & Shea Soap Recipe

IMG_20170804_094113625

I used fresh aloe vera gel in place of the water and a large amount of shea butter went into this recipe. Since it will be done curing in October I added orange and black colorant and a pumpkin spice scent. On the side I poured several unscented and plain aloe & shea bars as well. The white in this soap will darken a bit as it cures so you will need to use titanium Dioxide to keep white soap white.

Recipe

7.5 oz Coconut Oil

6 oz Palm Oil

4.5 oz Shea Butter

4.5 oz Olive Oil

3 oz Castor Oil

3 oz Sunflower Oil

1.5 oz Hemp Seed Oil

4.17 oz Sodium Hydroxide

9.90 oz Aloe Vera Gel

(46.53 oz by weight total)

This recipe has a 5% Superfat,  is 33% Aloe Vera Gel. Scented with 1.5 oz Pumpkin Spice Fragrance oil.

Colorants used: Activated Charcoal powder, Racing Stripe Orange Mica, Titanium Dioxide to maintain white color.

I did not add TD and this is the same soap 3 days later after darkening, it would be better with TD in my opinion..

Last Day of Vacation/Valencia Soap

After a walk with Drew yesterday I made a valencia orange loaf of soap with a spoon swirl design.  This soap is primarily palm, coconut and olive oil with the addition of castor oil, sweet almond oil, shea butter and nettle extract, it has a superfat of 7%. I added bentonite clay to help hold the scent since I am using a citrus essential oil, it is said that citrus oils fade in cold process but this one has good reviews from soapers. I was also careful of the flash point.

I cut them this morning. The round soaps have pieces of loofah in them. Their scent is quite strong.

I am now at 20 bars made this last week, I think I am good until those are cured at least.

Brick Red Oxide and Mantra Swirl

Every soap is still a new experiment for me, this is my 5th batch of Cold Process and per the rules I made for myself I had triple checked my recipe and prepared everything, created a perfectly fitting divider for my soap and as I was concentrating on not messing up the divider (because I have never used one before) it occurred to me that I forgot to line my mold. So I essentially had to run a knife between the soap and the mold to dislodge it.I will not make that mistake next time!

I adapted this recipe from my usual by adding oat extract and shea butter and selected a cranberry scent.

Strawberry Essence Lotion

IMG_4570

This is a mild scented Strawberry Lotion made from Distilled Strawberry Fruit. I only had a sampler size so I made this as a small single bottle recipe, It fit perfectly into a 4 oz bottle.

Strawberry Essence Lotion

.2 oz Mango Butter

.15 oz Shea Butter

.25 oz Meadowfoam Oil

.2 oz Emulsifying Wax

.08 oz Stearic Acid

1 oz Distilled Water (Heated to near boiling)

2 oz Strawberry Essence

.8 oz Vegetable Glycerin

.15 oz Oat Extract

.1 oz Sea Buckthorn Extract

.05 oz Ginkgo Extract

1 ml Alkanet Root infused Sunflower Oil

Perservative of your choice(I used 1% Optiphen ND)

In a double boiler (I use a measuring cup and a small sauce pan for this) gently melt together Mango Butter, She Butter, Meadowfoam oil, Emusifying Wax and Stearic Acid.

Heat Distilled water in the microwave until near boiling, pour into mixing bowl and add melted butters and oils to distilled water slowly, whisking constantly. If your distilled water isn’t hot enough it will cause the oil mixture to partially resolify causing lumps. Whisk vigorously for about 60 seconds then slowly mix in Strawberry Essence and Vegetable Glycerin. Continue to mix for a few minutes then mix in remaining extracts Alkanet root and preservatives.

Rest for a few minutes then whisk for a minute, rest and whisk, rest and whisk until there is no separation after resting. When completely emulsified pour into container of your choice and let it sit open for at least 4 hours before applying lid.

Alkanet Root Colorant

I get mine ground up but not in a powder, it’s more like large coffee ground size. Add a tablespoon of the root to 3 tablespoons of carrier oil(I used Sunflower Oil) Seal it up in a jar and shake daily. After a week strain Root debris out of the oil and return oil to jar, Add another tablespoon of dried Alkanet Root to jar and shake daily.  After a weeks strain root debris from the oil and place oil in a clean jar and seal until needed.
